Via Crucis or Way of the Cross trail presents the last journey of Jesus Christ with life size representations and in art forms. It is the 2nd easiest trail among the many trails at Placa del Monestir.
The Via Crucis trail starts right after the statue of Abat Oliba, the founder of Montserrat monastery.
Most part of the trail has flat path and gentle steps except towards the end where there is a 30 degree up slope. The lush foliage and many seats along the entire trail makes it the perfect picnic place.
Here are a snapshot of some of the life size sculptures….
And the representations in art forms….
The Chapel of the Dolorosa (Our Lady of Solitude’s Chapel) marks the end of the Via Crucis trail.
Miranda de Fra Gari Trail
While one trail ends, another begins. At the end of the Via Crucis trail, there’s a narrow unmarked path leading into the hill. This is the Miranda de Fra Gari trail. It is the shortest trail. The walk uphill is relatively easy except that it is path with small stones thus adding some challenge to the climb. After an easy walk at Via Crucis, the Miranda de Fra Gari trail added some excitement to the entire walk.
The final point of the Miranda de Fra Gari trail offers breathtaking view of the Sanctuary (Placa del Monestir).
